Lambert Sustris

This painting makes reference to a lost work by Michelangelo in an different form which depicted Leda with the swan, of which there is a copy by Rosso Fiorentino in the National Gallery in London, and another one in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (ill.1). Lambert Sustris stayed for an extended period in Italy, above all in Venice and Padua, where he was strongly influenced by Titian. He accompanied him on his historic journey in 1548 to the Imperial Diets in Augsburg. He received commissions from the merchant princes of the Fugger and from Cardinal Otto Truchseß von Waldburg. His particular art historical significance is as a landscape painter. As such he produced the landscape backdrops for paintings by Titian and Tintoretto.
